attempts to establish a new moral compass

I have found myself in recent days bombarded my impositions of faith, beliefs in some destiny guided by an invisible hand that has a grand plan. From people around to my own students who seem bent on getting me to believe in that absurd fiction known as Rick Warren's "Purpose Driven Life."

In reaction to these things I am coming slowly to the resolution to attempt to write about values in this blog. It may come as a surprise, but I do believe in values, and I do believe in morals. However, I see the need to redefine our sets of values.

Most of us base our moral compasses on religious beliefs. I have been feeling that the religious fervor can often lead to a loss of perspective. If you want a full chronicling of the negative effects of religion then look no further than Dawkins' The God Delusion.

I feel that this is a good time to try and reorient our moral compasses. But instead of religious belief being our north, I want us to focus on humanist belief. It's difficult to define this, I know. I would like the idea of the humanist belief approach to essentially mean that we make our decisions not based on the belief that there is something bigger out there we don't understand who dictates whether we get life eternal in paradise but rather that we make our decisions for the better of this world and for the advancement of the human race. I know it seems vague, but as I make entries reacting to various situations that attempt to make us reconsider our moral orientations then I hope that I too will be able to establish guidelines through situations and applications.

Hello, Sir Carl! Reading this post, I remember something my dad said about secular morality. He's read Dawkins, Sam Harris (Letter to a Christian Nation), and knows more or less how too much religion (fanaticism/fundamentalism especially) can be not so good. And he's Catholic, haha. I hate the fact that lots of public schools in the US don't have evolution in their curriculum, or that the Philippine government doesn't allow contraception for poor families because the bishop said so. What people need is a sense of secular morality. My dad said that religion is something personal, so we shouldn't go imposing our beliefs on others and let them affect the public realm.

And the thing you said about values is right. People don't need a certain religious belief in order to be good to each other. It is high time we readjust our moral compasses. :D -Tanya

My brother, currently a philosophy teacher, has been getting The Purpose-Driven Life from some relatives, too! Haha. He gave it a shot for fun and stopped after a few pages 'cause it immediately attacked philosophy. It's funny how people seem to feel the need to give that book as a gift to thinkers like you. What's funny is they think they're doing you a favor and helping you straighten out your path.

About this entry, I couldn't agree more. People base their morals and values on religion (which I can't say is completely wrong), but when this happens, the will to do good is powered by the drive to please a higher being, and to reap the fruits of your labor one day. That is never good. I remember the other day, we were asked to define 'social justice.' My definition was simply "the recognition of human rights." Facilitating the process of human development should be the concern, not just doing things for the sake of doing them or because it is what is considered "moral" by your religion's standards. What you said, basically sums it up:

"...But rather that we make our decisions for the better of this world and for the advancement of the human race."

Great read, Sir. Makes one think :)
